Iceland-blog

Iceland was a dream trip. When I heard my photographer friend from California was planning on going in Mid-April of this year (2018), I thought it was the perfect opportunity to go since I didn't want to go alone. From driving 7 hours on our first day to waking up at 3:30 AM for sunrise, the majestic scenery made it worth it to go through different challenges of exploring Iceland. My experience in Iceland made me feel like I was in some different planet.

Road to Snæfellsjökull Peninsula

I met up with my friend Makito and his five friends at Keflavik Airport at 5AM. From there we rented out a 4x4 car from Icerental 4x4 and headed out west to Snæfellsjökull Peninsula. One of the spots that we wanted to go to in Snæfellsjökull Peninsula was a natural looking bridge by the coast that we saw on Asasteinars Instagram at Arnarstapi. When we got there, we found a similar and different looking natural bridge (Photo below).

After sunset, we headed east to meet up with Makito’s five friends at Blue View Cabins Airbnb which was a 3 hr and 20 minute drive from Kirkjufell. The Airbnb rental were pretty expensive so all 7 of us on the trip had to split up the cost for each Airbnb rentals.

Sunrise at Solheimansandur (Plane Crash)

The tourist spots are always packed with people so we had to wake up very early before sunrise to get the shots we wanted. We woke up at 3:30AM(The earliest time I’ve every woken up for something) to make it to Solheimansandur (Plane Crash) before sunset. It was a 20 minute drive from the hotel in Vik to the Solheimansandur (Plane Crash) parking lot, and it was a 30 minute hike/walk from the parking lot to the actually plane crash site.

Blue Hour at Vestrahorn (Stokknes)

After having dinner at Vik, Makito and I were rushing to Vestrahorn to catch the sunset. By the time we got there, we completely missed the sunset as it was quickly turning into blue hour. When we got back to our Airbnb place, we were contemplating about waking up early to catch the Sunrise at Vestrahorn. We both didn’t feel like waking up so early, but we had some motivation since we wanted a better shot.

Sunrise at Vestrahorn(Stokknes)

Despite how late we were up last night, we managed to wake up at 4AM to go to Vestrahorn one more time. When we got there, there a was short moment when the sun pierced through the clouds, hitting the far left mountain peaks. It was as if God was telling us to take a picture from this angle. Waking up for sunrise at Vestrahorn was not originally in our trip itinerary, but it was one of the top highlights of our road trip in Iceland.
